SAVE ON POSTAGE
The best way to save money is list hygiene. Next to list hygiene, is format (postcards are cheaper than letter or package mailings). After list and format, the biggest cost savings is in your choice of postage. Postage regulations are complex, to say the least. But understanding the nuances can save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.
MACHINABLE VS. NON-MACHINABLE: ~30% MORE FOR NON-MACHINABLE
Machinable. Mail pieces are machinable if they can be sorted through the USPS sorting equipment.
Non-Machinable. There is an extra handling fee for non-machinable pieces, such as:
- Non-standard shapes (for example, square envelopes)
- Anything in plastic wrapping (poly envelopes)
- Uneven thickness (pens or other inclusions)
- Containers of wood or metal
- Mailings with liquid in glass containers or over 1 gallon of liquid in any container
- Insecure “wrapping”
1ST CLASS VS. STANDARD MAIL: ~35% DISCOUNT FOR STANDARD MAIL
1st Class: If time to delivery is important, then first class is the way to go. Also, first class includes forwarding and return services.
Standard Mail: All Standard Mail rates are bulk rates, and each mailing must meet a minimum quantity of 200 pieces or 50 pounds of mail. This postage, though significantly less expensive, is a lot slower than first class. And, Standard Mail is not forwarded or returned unless you request it for an extra fee. Bulk mail also pulls lower response rates than 1st class.
PRE-SORTED VS. AUTOMATED:
Pre-Sorted. No matter the class, a minimal discount (~5%) is applied if you sort your mailing by zip code. To qualify for this discount, you must bundle each zip code and deliver them to the post office with the required paperwork and tray tags.
Automated. There is a substantial discount (~18%) if your piece includes the delivery point barcode or Zip+4 barcode on its mailing label. There are requirements for bar code placement, size, and legibility. Automated discounts also have to follow a certain level of sorting requirements.
